The more ways you code memory the better you'll be able to enter it into your brain and get it later. And the more ways you can tie the new information to things you already have stored in long term memory, the better.
Let's think of an example from school. You need to learn vocabulary for an English test tomorrow.
Most students look at the word, move their eyes away and try to remember.Bad idea in most cases. You may have it for a split second but it will be gone in minutes.
Why?
Because you've only given the brain one way to remember it...the text. Now, your brain won't say
so but it wants to see a little bit more effort. After all, you want this word to make it into long term memory (less to study at final's time).
Here's a better genius iq idea.
- Look at the word and how it's spelled.
- Call up a picture in your mind of the word
in action.
- Come up with a funny phrase that includes
the word.
This way you are giving your genius iq brain more of what it wants and that is a winner for sure.Furthermore, keeping in mind the comments about learning styles, you are appealing to different learning styles with each way your genius iq brain try to remember.
That means you're giving yourself more chances to hold and later find the information. Its not bad if I do say so to myself!
Remember, when it's time to learn new information, if you try to ram it in (rote learning), it will fade quickly because it is not tied to anything. Just like a helium balloon that isn't tied to a chair, it will float away when you're not looking.
That's why there's association.
Here's an example. When you were little, you had trouble spelling the word piece. Was it "peice" or "piece"?
By looking at the correct spelling, "Piece", you can see that it includes the word "Pie" in it. So, you associate the word "piece" with "pie" which you already knew. And presto! Your genius iq mind remember it.
You see, we can find associations in almost everything we see and hear. You just have to learn what to look for so the association becomes automatic. in your genius iq mind. But once you do, you'll see how you begin to connect things without thinking about them. Memorization will be a "piece of cake" for a genius iq person.
